Here is a quick tutorial on how I come up with and create items for Illutia. I am not going to push any specific program, but I did use graphics gale for this particular image. I normally use Paint shop Pro.
Firstly I come up with a concept using a method called the "Creativity Matrix". I cross two basic ideas to stimulate my brain to come up with a new concept.
Then I lay out the flat shape, I try not to get too crazy with the details as i am just trying to make something that fits the character body and will work in game.
Next I flesh out (scuse the pun) some more of the details with a lighter shade..You can go darker at this point too if you found you made the base shade too light. I try to vary the hue slightly when shading to avoid a flat gradient look and give everything a nice warm feel to it.
Then I add highlights to further shape things. In the case of Illutia the light source comes from the top right.
Next I strengthen the outline. Variation in the outline (also known as selective outlining) helps to give further shape and definition to your item. I tend to use a fairly strong outline however to make the items "pop" in game. Try to figure the light source into the outline as well.
Next I add the finer details. I was hoping to add stitches to this Zombie boa as well but they did not turn out how I hoped. I opted for some bones instead, as well as strengthening the outline further with a brownish colour.
Well, I hope you enjoy my short tutorial. For items that are less organic, I tend to start with an outline instead of fleshing out the basic shape first. It helps to capture the harder edge (weapons, metal armors etc)
Feel free to request more tutorials, I am not sure when/if I will have time for them all but I am happy to help out aspiring pixel artists.
Illutia and respective characters are copyright to myself (Jennifer Dawe) and Crazed Monkeys LLC
Thanks for the great tutorial Shivers. I feel like practicing pixel art and was specifically looking for a Illutia tutorial to start out. Nice to see the main artist provided that tutorial.
Quick question though. Is there even a chance of making nice looking pixel art in Photoshop with a pen tablet? Or would that not even be considered pixel art anymore? It's what I'm used to using, and figured it's the same when you zoom in, but if not I'll look up tutorials for a better suited program like PSP.
I use Photoshop CS and Adobe Illustrator
Well, happy I found you on Deviant Art and keep up the nice looking items.

This newsletter was "born" back in March 2007, from a conversation between ~Lareth and =FrozenStarRo, who with the help of their friends *Iardacil and =Sylwiaa , wanted to make something to promote known and unknown photomanipulators alike here on DeviantArt. As of September 2009 =ImaginaryRosse joined the project and will be helping us out with the weekly choices. While things have changed over time, the essence of the newsletter is still the same. As of recent, the talented =Behana has joined us in bringing you this weekly newsletter and we are excited to have her on board. This is a special feature, with a selection of 50 manips from the past year that we loved.
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
